Affiliation, trademarks, and the limits of what PennyOS knows. Read this before relying on it.
Independent project
PennyOS is an independent, non-commercial project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or supported by any of the following, and none of them is responsible for it:
- SQFMI, maker of the Beepy, and Beeper, its launch partner.
- BlackBerry, whose keyboard design the Beepy uses.
- Raspberry Pi Ltd, maker of the Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi OS.
- Obsidian (Dynalist Inc.). PennyOS reads vaults of markdown files in the format Obsidian uses. It is not an Obsidian plugin and does not include or modify Obsidian's software.
- Anthropic, maker of Claude and Claude Code.
- Google, provider of Gmail.
- Cloudflare, host of this site and the project's hubs.
- Even Realities, maker of the G2 glasses.
- Tailscale, Ollama, the OpenStreetMap Foundation, Open-Meteo, BeaconDB, the Wikimedia Foundation, and every other service credited on this site.
- Apple and Microsoft. The os8 and win95 Home themes are homages to Mac OS 8 and Windows 95, drawn from scratch in one-bit pixels. They contain no Apple or Microsoft artwork or code.
- The owners of Inspector Gadget. The name "Penny" refers to that show's character and her computer book. The project claims no rights in the character.
Trademarks
All product names, logos and brands are the property of their respective owners and are used on this site only to identify compatible hardware and services. Use of these names does not imply endorsement.
Images on this site
Every panel image is a real frame rendered by the PennyOS simulator with demo data, and some frames include live public data fetched when they were rendered, such as a forecast or nearby places. No image shows a real user's mail, notes, vault or search results. Frames can lag the current release.
Pre-release software
PennyOS is pre-1.0 and has not had an independent security audit. The security features described in the guide reduce risk; they do not eliminate it. A lost device with a weak PIN, or one whose key has not been revoked on your server, can still expose data.
AI answers
Ask, Chat, the Store dig and Search's web pass produce text with AI models. The text can be wrong, out of date, or confidently invented. PennyOS shows which pages or sources an answer drew on where it can, and that does not make the answer correct.
Search and people lookups
Search reads public sources and offers links to people search sites. Results can match the wrong person, be stale, or combine records about different people. They are leads, not facts. Using public records to make decisions about employment, housing, credit or insurance may be regulated where you live, and PennyOS is not built for those purposes. Do not use it to locate, track or harass anyone. See the terms.
Location, safety and emergency information
- The Beepy has no GPS. Locate estimates position from nearby Wi-Fi, and it can be wrong or unavailable.
- Field's emergency numbers come from a static table covering a limited list of countries. A country not in the table says so. Numbers change; confirm locally.
- Places, sanctuaries, exits and cameras come from OpenStreetMap, which is mapped by volunteers. Missing entries are common. "None mapped" never means "none present".
Weather
Forecasts come from Open-Meteo and are cached. The screen shows how old the data is. Do not rely on it for safety critical decisions.
Property records
Store reads San Francisco public datasets through the project's property lookup. Those datasets lag: the business registry by about six weeks, the vacancy tax roll by a year or more. Owner and broker names can be outdated or incomplete. Store answers only inside San Francisco.
Hardware
Battery, charging and front light notes in the guide describe one device and published schematics. Soldering, changing a charge resistor, or opening the case carries a risk of damage, fire or injury, and is done at your own risk.
