Fieldbook privacy

Fieldbook is published by oddrefresh. This page describes what version 0.4.0 actually does.

Location

Fieldbook reads your position through the Even Realities app, which uses your phone's location services. It asks for a fix when it starts and follows updates while it runs, so every screen is about the place you are standing. If no fix is available it uses a fixed point in San Francisco and says so on the glasses. The Even Realities app handles location and the connection to the glasses under its own privacy policy.

What leaves your phone

Fieldbook has no server of its own. It asks public services directly, and each request carries your IP address like any web request. Here is what each one receives.

  • Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com and air-quality-api.open-meteo.com). Your coordinates, rounded to four decimal places, for the forecast and the air quality.
  • OpenStreetMap's Overpass API (overpass-api.de). Your coordinates, to five decimal places, in two searches: named places within 400 m, and the Nearby and Watch layers within 1200 m.
  • Photon by Komoot (photon.komoot.io) and Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org). Your coordinates, to five decimal places, to find the street you are on, the building at that spot, and the country.
  • Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org). Your coordinates, to five decimal places, to find articles about places within 400 m.
  • Frankfurter (api.frankfurter.dev). Only a three letter currency code, such as EUR. It is not asked at all in a country that uses the dollar.
  • USGS (earthquake.usgs.gov). Nothing about you. Fieldbook downloads the public list of the last day's earthquakes and works out distances on the phone.
  • Where the ISS at (api.wheretheiss.at). Nothing about you. Fieldbook downloads the station's position and track and works out distances on the phone.

Sunrise, sunset and the moon are calculated on the phone and send nothing. The Places, Brief, Nearby and Watch searches are made when you open those screens or move more than 100 m, never on a timer. Those services receive the requests under their own policies. Fieldbook sends them no name, no account and no identifier.

What is stored

Fieldbook saves three things in the Even Realities app's local storage on your phone: your unit setting, the screen you were last on, and the last answer from each feed. That last item includes the street and place names from your last Places search, so the app can show real numbers the moment it opens again. Each new answer replaces the old one. It stays until the app is removed. When the phone moves Fieldbook to the background, the Even Realities app may hold the same kind of in-memory state so the app can pick up where it was.

Selling, tracking, training

Fieldbook has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting. It does not sell or share anything, and nothing it holds is used to train anything. It keeps nothing of yours on a server.
