Breadcrumb privacy
Breadcrumb is published by oddrefresh. This page describes what version 0.6.0 actually does.
Your marks stay on your phone
- A mark is a latitude, a longitude, the accuracy of the fix, the time you made it, and a name. The name starts as the clock time, and you can change it on the phone screen.
- Marks are saved in the Even Realities app's local storage on your phone, along with which mark you are walking back to. Breadcrumb keeps up to 20 marks, and they stay until you delete them on the glasses or the phone screen, or remove the app.
- Your marks are never sent anywhere. Breadcrumb has no account, no server of its own, no analytics and no crash reporting.
Location
Breadcrumb reads your position through the Even Realities app, which uses your phone's location services. It asks for a fix every few seconds while it is running, to measure how far you are from a mark. Positions it is not saving as a mark are held in memory only. The Even Realities app handles location and the connection to the glasses under its own privacy policy.
What leaves your phone
Marking a spot and walking back to it need no connection. The maps and street names do, and they are the only network use in the app:
- OpenFreeMap (
tiles.openfreemap.org). To draw the map on the glasses and name the street you are on, Breadcrumb downloads a small file describing the tile set, then one map tile covering about 2.4 km around where you are standing. A new tile is fetched only when you walk into a different one. The tile's address reveals that rough area, and like any web request it carries your IP address. - The OpenStreetMap tile server (
tile.openstreetmap.org). The phone screen shows a small map beside each mark, made of four map images. Those requests reveal the rough area of each mark and your IP address. - openstreetmap.org, only if you tap a map on the phone screen. That opens the OpenStreetMap website at the mark's exact coordinates.
Those services receive the requests under their own policies. Breadcrumb sends them no name, no identifier, and nothing else about you.
With no signal, none of this happens and the rest of the app works as before.
Selling, tracking, training
Breadcrumb does not sell, share, or track anything, and nothing it holds is used to train anything. It has nothing of yours on a server to use that way.
